DJ Cuppy says she gets marriage proposals every day and reveals how her growing list of degrees helps her dodge marriage pressure.
  • DJ Cuppy says she receives marriage proposals every day, including from people outside her fanbase.

  • The DJ revealed that she uses her growing list of academic qualifications to dodge questions about marriage from her grandmother.
  • Cuppy also discussed her education, philanthropy and a moment when her father was recognised as “Cuppy’s dad.”

Nigerian disc jockey and entrepreneur Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has revealed that she receives marriage proposals every day, but has found her own way of dodging the pressure to settle down.

Speaking in an interview with Marie Claire published on Thursday, Cuppy explained that her constantly growing list of academic qualifications has doubled as a convenient excuse whenever the topic of marriage comes up, particularly with her grandmother. “I call it avoidance of marriage,” she said. “Every time my grandma asks, ‘Where’s your husband?’, I show her a new certificate.”

According to Cuppy, the proposals aren’t limited to fans. “I get marriage proposals every day. And I’m not even talking about fans. Everyone is apparently trying to help me when I have not asked to be helped,” she said.

Her growing academic profile isn’t just a dodge, though. Cuppy holds degrees from New York University, the University of Oxford and King’s College London, and says she’s already considering another qualification.

She explained that her interest in continued education is tied to wanting a deeper understanding of the industries she works in. “With entertainment, I have never just wanted to participate. I want to understand who controls what and learn as much about their processes as possible,” she said.

Cuppy also spoke about her father, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, sharing a moment that made her feel her public profile had come full circle. She recalled him being stopped at an airport by someone who recognised him only as “Cuppy’s dad.” “It made me feel good because normally, I’m Femi’s daughter, but on that day, to that person, he was my dad,” she said.

She also touched on her philanthropic work, drawing a distinction between charity and philanthropy. “Charity is just giving because you want to,” she said. “Being a philanthropist, though, is about making a lasting difference. It’s about long-lasting results.”

For now, marriage remains on hold, with Cuppy seemingly content to let her next degree answer the question for her.
